Mac OS X 10.5.7 issues
Leopard owners upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.7 have been experiencing critical errors, discussions on Apple's support forums show. At times problems have begun as early as installation, with digital signatures being registered as invalid despite multiple download attempts. Other users have reported subsequent looping errors, which may require powering down a system and rebooting one or more times before control can be regained.
Those making it past early errors are reporting further problems, such as missing external disks and altered display resolutions. Troubleshooting measures are said to exist however, such as a five-step process to cope with looping, and a PRAM reset to fix resolutions. Regarding digital signatures, it is suggested that those affected directly download the comprehensive Combo Update instead of relying on Leopard's Software Update function.
VMware has meanwhile advised against updating to v10.5.7 if using an ATI graphics card and running 3D Windows applications through Fusion. The ATI driver in the v10.5.7 is said to break Fusion's 3D acceleration, triggering issues such as slow speed, bad rendering or outright crashes. Apple and ATI have acknowledged the matter and are collaborating on an update; VMware notes, though, that Fusion owners can continue to use v10.5.7 so long as they only load 2D Windows applications.

Weird, I only had a single reboot for the update followed by another boot for the new Safari beta.
Go figure.

...and while my own system seems to be more stable I would suggest Apple needs to get 10.5 fully fixed ASAP before they put any more resources into 10.6...
I am still debating downgrading to 10.4.11 which worked beautifully for me, and Apple hardware limitations forcing migration are tempering my enthusiasm for any further Mac upgrades...

to bury your head in the sand and stop applying updates forever more, is frankly, cutting off your nose to spite your face. Sure, its a game we are forced to play, but to try to beat the update/upgrade cycle by sticking your fingers in your ears and going "la la la la", is futile.

Anyone else lose the use of their infrared remote? Mine stopped working on the iMac we use for 'Net radio in our office; the option's totally missing from the Security prefpane.

Ran combo Update no prob.

Instead of using the auto update, I went to apple.com/support and clicked on Leopard which brought me to the leopard page. There you can find the combo 10.5.7 update in the right upper corner. Downloaded that. Ran disk permissions check and made sure I quit all applications. Then ran the installer restarted everything working trouble free. No problems what so ever. Macfixit.com always recommends using the combo updater when going to the next rev of the OS. Also if you are experiencing problems run the combo updater which most of the times will correct the issues that you are having as well. Also remember if you used some app that modified your OS, then that might be the cause of your troubles too.

Is to always reboot before doing any installs. And most importantly, always wait at least a week and read some boards to see if there are any major issues. I have noticed several times where an initial releases are buggy but get fixed within a week.

Far from Apples slickest of updates.
I had some pretty serious issues installing this on both my Macs.
Initial download was very slow, and then gave me some error anyway. Combo update got around both those issues. But then when installing, both computers locked up with a bluescreen. Multiple restarts seem to get around that eventually.
Its all good now though, but still.. This is a bit shabby for Apple.

b9robot is correct, ALWAYS download and update using the Combo updater. Yeah, they're twice the size, but you'll have fewer problems.
When doing a system update...
A. Run Cocktail (or Onyx) to clear caches, fix permissions, etc.
B. Run Disk Warrior to repair the disk directory.
C. Clone my (then) current boot drive to an external FireWire drive with SuperDuper! (or CarbonCopyCloner). So, if the update does EVIL, I can restore to a working system.
THEN run the Combo Updater.
When Rebooting after running the update, I zap the PRAM, too!
Yes, it takes extra time, but I RARELY have problems!
Oh yeah, 10.5.7 fixed a nagging sleep issue I'd been having with my MacBook Pro! Otherwise no other problems. YAY!!!
The internal display would shut off after waking it up. All I had to do was hit the screen brightness button, but still annoying.

I just updated this morning via Software Update; figured I'd wait a few days for the expected article saying there are problems (WHEN has there been a release that worked perfectly for EVERYONE?)
I always cross my fingers before every update. BUT I minimize the risk by using Cocktail before major updates, by repairing disk permissions before and after every single software update no matter what application, and yes, Disk Warrior, PRAM, and even the super duper route are certainly even further safeguards.
I've yet to have a problem with ANY 10.5 update. I would not recommend downgrading without examining other potential issues first and some heavy re-install and disk warrior action to start from scratch with 10.5
