iPhone 3GS ranks in middle of radiation tests

Environmental organization claims health threat

Apple's latest iPhone, the 3GS, ranks almost squarely in the middle of smartphones in terms of radiation output, a non-profit activist organization says. The Environmental Working Group notes that according to compiled data, the 3GS produces approximately 1.19W/kg of radiation. The figure is substantially lower than the worst-case examples, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and the Kyocera Jax S1300, which each produce 1.55W/kg.

The 3GS still produces considerably more output than phones towards the bottom of the scale, such as the Samsung Impression and BlackBerry Storm, which are rated at 0.35 and 0.57W/kg respectively. It also emits more than the 0.97W/kg of the original iPhone, but less than the iPhone 3G, rated at 1.39W/kg. The three best-performing phones on the list, such as the Nokia 9300i, are no longer being sold.

In a new report, the EWG claims that people using cellphones for 10 years or more could develop "serious health problems." Because of radiation, the report suggests, cellphone users have an "increased risk of developing brain and salivary gland tumors, neurological symptoms such as migraine and vertigo, and neurodevelopmental effects observed as behavioral problems in young children." Though the impact of phones is questioned, the EWG is pushing for the US government to require displaying radiation levels at points of sale.

Yes, but it is substantially worse then the 2G model.

Substantially more?

Um, RTFA: The article lists the 2G model: .97 vs 3g's 1.10.

And frankly the monitor I'm typing on, the power lines stretched outside, you name it, likely has more c*** coming out of it than my phone. It's all bad, so go head for the hills. Or call a lawyer and sue.

I'll have to start leaving my iPhone in my front pants pocket, maybe it will prevent me from causing babies. :)

This "study" has fooled many. Not consistent with

The "Environmental Working Group," like the "EM Radiation Research Trust" are PSEUDO-SCIENCE organizations. I read the full report that revived this zombie of a tall-tale! http://www.radiationresearch.org/pdfs/15reasons_download.asp?format=2

The truth is, cell phones operate within the OPPOSITE end of the electromagnetic spectrum from high-frequency/high-energy/tiny-wavelength forms such as ultraviolet light, x-rays and gamma rays. Cell phones operate near the microwave end of the spectrum with is between radio to infrared forms. Microwaves aren’t small and don’t have a ton of energy comparatively. See this link for comparisons and scales of EM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_spectrum

The report above compares cell phone signals to x-rays (p.17), which is ridiculous! Anyone can easily debunk this bullsh@t by looking it up on Wikipedia. The reason why UV, x-rays, and gamma rays promote cancerous cell growth is because they are so tiny, so high in energy, and of such high frequency that they can actually disrupt DNA in biological cells. This disruption is what wacks out cells and starts tumors. That’s REAL Science!
