Next version of Aperture to become Aperture X?

Leak hints at product name change

The next version of Aperture may be named Aperture X, an Amazon leak suggests. A book called Aperture X: A Workflow Guide for Digital Photographers has appeared at the Amazon website, credited to Ken McMahon and Nik Rawlinson, who previously wrote a guide for Aperture 2. The book's listing includes the warning "UNDER NDA," suggesting that it was meant to be kept hidden in a database.

A release date of May 26th, 2010 is also mentioned, which could hint at the timeframe for a corresponding software debut. A switch from numbers to the letter X may reflect a trend in Apple apps; the Snow Leopard version of QuickTime, for instance, is referred to as QuickTime X (10.0), even though the preceding Leopard version is v7.6. Such a change could suggest that Aperture will be a Snow Leopard exclusive.

If designed for the new OS, the program would likely take advantage of Grand Central and 64-bit architecture in order to improve speeds in sorting and processing.

Just tried the LR 3.0 beta yesterday. Not sure if they are using GC or not, but this may put Aperture over the top (which has been slacking recently)

Tech Book publishers use "X" when the new versions final name is not yet known. And as for ship dates... book's almost always ship months after the actual product... especially Apple products. One last thing... Apple has a favorite publisher and it's not this books publisher. Apple has a bias for Peachpit.

aiki has it correct about the "X" title.

When it comes to GCD processing, i could see this as very useful for batch importing and processing. When it comes to applying edits in the app, though, I'm pretty sure it's the GPU that the system relies on to make them in real-time.
